Copper Germ-Resistance & Medical Benefits

A recent 2008 study done by Professor Tom Elliott, a leading microbiology researcher in the UK, found that copper showcases a unique germ-fighting quality unlike any other metal ever tested. In his clinical trial at Selly Oak hospital, he analyzed the faucets, toilet seats, and door handles of the local hospitals to that of a medical facility that was specially-outfitted with copper fixtures. The results of his study found that only the copper fittings all but ELIMINATED the common bugs found in these locations. In fact, the copper items had up to 95% fewer germs altogether!

The results of this study were so conclusive that if further hospital-based trials prove as successful, the research may lead to installation of copper fixtures throughout the country. Many scientists believe that copper has the unique ability to ’suffocate’ germs so that they stop replicating on contact with copper. As such, they point to the high-profile MRSA and C difficile outbreaks in the U.S. could probably have been avoided if hospitals were outfitted with copper fittings in appliances and fixtures in high-risk and high-volume areas than the typical stainless steel varieties. These same lab tests show that copper also kills other dangerous germs including the flu virus and E coli food poison bug. Of course, others scientist are not surprised with the results of this study as the healing and medically-beneficial aspects of copper has been recognized for thousands of years. More than 4000 years ago, the Egyptians used it to sterilize wounds and drinking water — which is still commonly in use today. At present, copper is a common constituent in medicines including antiseptic and antifungal creams. It is also believed to have anti-inflammatory properties as many people, including doctors and professional athletes wear necklaces and sports bands to take advantage of this property.
